AirAsia X Bhd (AAX) has unveiled a massive debt restructuring proposal in which the airline will reconstitute RM63.5 billion worth of debts, including future lease rentals, aircraft purchase commitments and advanced ticket sales, into a principal amount of up to RM200 million.

Besides a steep haircut for creditors, the long-haul low-cost carrier also proposed a capital reduction of 90% of its issued share capital in order to offset its accumulated losses. This means a reduction of RM1.38 billion from its share capital.

AAX, which slipped to the brink of insolvency as the Covid-19 pandemic added to its financial woes, has also proposed share consolidation to combine every 10 shares into one, according to a bourse filing.

AirAsia X Bhd (AAX) has redesignated its director Datuk Lim Kian Onn as deputy chairman to lead the airline’s restructuring.

Lim, 63, a board member of AAX since 2012, will assume the deputy chairman’s post with effect from tomorrow, according to a filing with Bursa Malaysia.

“Globally, the commercial airline industry continues to face uncertainty as a result of the unprecedented Covid-19 pandemic.

“To avoid a liquidation and to allow the airline to fly again, the only option is for AirAsia X to undertake a group-wide debt and corporate restructuring, and update its business model to survive and thrive in the long term.

“The right-sizing of the group’s level of operations and its financial obligations are prerequisites for raising any fresh capital, comprising both equity and debt, that will be used to support the implementation of the group’s revised business plan,” AAX said.
